Two Decades of Bikepacking Adventures: From Coast to Coast and Beyond

There is something profoundly transformative about reconnecting with the vitality we once thought was lost. Society often suggests that aging inherently brings limitations and that the energy of youth fades with time. Yet, what if this perspective could be challenged? Imagine if instead of resigning ourselves to this notion of decline, we chose to embrace the freedom and joy of our earlier years as an active choice. Cycling offers a unique opportunity to reclaim that youthful vigor. The simple act of pedaling can shift our perception of age from a mere number to a state of mind.

Engaging in cycling is more than a physical activity; it’s a form of resistance against stagnation. Many of our peers might find solace in inactivity, convinced that their most vibrant days are behind them. However, there is a quieter voice within us that resists this narrative. To ride a bicycle is to assert our choice of vitality. Each pedal stroke is a testament to our refusal to settle, reminding us that we can still seek and experience freedom. The sensations of wind and movement remain timeless, symbolizing the enduring possibilities of being alive.

It is intriguing to consider how often we impose limitations on ourselves, influenced by societal expectations. We are subtly guided to pause or withdraw as we age. Yet, there are individuals who challenge these boundaries, finding that life does not halt at a certain age or after particular experiences. By embracing the unknown and continuing to cycle, they experience a profound transformation. In doing so, they rediscover a sense of living that transcends traditional notions of aging.

At its essence, cycling embodies mindfulness. It encourages us to be present, to focus on each moment, turn, and breath. This awareness fosters a sense of clarity and connection, stripping away life’s distractions and allowing us to engage with something deeper. Through this practice, we experience a form of mental freedom, which contributes significantly to our overall vitality.

As we advance in age, societal expectations often push us toward acceptance of inevitable decline. However, a quiet revolution is taking place among those who choose to cycle. By reclaiming the joy of movement and adventure, they defy conventional expectations and preserve their health and enthusiasm for life. Each ride reveals a world rich with challenge and beauty, reaffirming that life can be vibrant and fulfilling at any age.

Challenging the belief that aging equates to inevitable decline can be difficult, yet immensely rewarding. For those who embrace cycling, this act of defiance offers significant benefits. While many might resign themselves to the perceived limitations of age, cyclists discover that these constraints are not as rigid as they seem. The essence of living fully is not about the duration of life but the quality of each moment.

Having spent the last two decades bikepacking around the world—from the Southern California coast to the islands of Hawaii, through Southeast Asia, and across Europe—I am now gearing up for a new adventure. This November, I will embark on a journey from New Mexico to Florida on a recumbent bike.
